A complete solar gate motor system consists of four components: the gate motor (24V DC), a solar panel (30W–50W), a charge controller, and a deep-cycle battery (12V, 12Ah–18Ah). The solar panel charges the battery through the charge controller during daylight hours, and the battery powers the motor for gate operations throughout the day and night.
Sizing Your Solar System
A typical residential sliding gate motor consumes approximately 2–4 ampere-hours per cycle (open + close). For a gate that operates 20 cycles per day, you need a battery capacity of at least 60–80Ah to provide several days of autonomous operation during cloudy weather. A 50W solar panel in Kenya's climate typically generates 200–250Wh per day, more than sufficient to replenish daily consumption.
Installation Best Practices
Mount the solar panel facing north (in Kenya's near-equatorial position, orientation is less critical but north-facing is optimal for southern hemisphere locations). Keep the panel clean and free of shade — even partial shading can reduce output by 50%. Use quality charge controllers with overcharge and deep-discharge protection to maximise battery life.
