How Sliding Gate Motors Work
A sliding gate motor uses a rack and pinion drive system. A motor-driven pinion gear engages with a nylon or steel rack bolted along the length of the gate. When activated, the motor rotates the pinion, which propels the gate along a ground rail in a smooth, linear motion.
The system is controlled via remote transmitters operating on rolling-code encryption for security. When the remote button is pressed, a radio signal is received by the control board, which activates the motor in the appropriate direction. Built-in limit switches or encoder technology ensure the gate stops precisely at the fully open and fully closed positions.
Modern sliding gate motors include obstacle detection using either mechanical clutch mechanisms or infrared safety beams. If the gate encounters an obstruction during closing, it automatically reverses to prevent damage or injury. Battery backup systems ensure the gate remains operational during power outages — critical for security in residential estates.
Solar-compatible models are available for properties without reliable mains power. A solar panel charges a dedicated battery bank, providing sufficient energy for typical daily gate cycles. The control board manages charge levels and prioritises essential operations during low-battery conditions.
